"Upon this parapet Cass directed the
small party of the 7th to fire as they flung themselves down at the end
of each rush. Constantly exposing himself, as did the other
officers, he had walked across the road and was standing correcting the
men's aim when he was struck down by a bullet which pierced his
breast. Lying beside the road he sent word by a wounded man to
Captain Henderson, instructing him to take over the advancing
line. After two further rushes Henderson, rising to his
knees to look through his glasses, was himself shot through the head."

"Henderson's
brother Rupert, a captain in 7th Battalion, survived the landing but was
killed during the Second Battle of Krithia. He wrote to his father
unaware that his brother, Lieutenant Alan Henderson, had received a
mortal wound during the landing:
