General

"Upon this parapet Cass directed the small party of the 7th to fire as they flung themselves down at the end of each rush.  Constantly exposing himself, as did the other officers, he had walked across the road and was standing correcting the men's aim when he was struck down by a bullet which pierced  his breast.  Lying beside the road he sent word by a wounded man to Captain Henderson, instructing him to take over the advancing line.  After two further rushes Henderson, rising to his knees to look through his glasses, was himself shot through the head."

"Henderson's brother Rupert, a captain in 7th Battalion, survived the landing but was killed during the Second Battle of Krithia.  He wrote to his father unaware that his brother, Lieutenant Alan Henderson, had received a mortal wound during the landing:

We had two days of, I should think, as heavy fighting as the war has ever seen, and our troops have now earned a name and have a reputation to uphold
