3rd Battalion Unit History - 27 April 1915

Tuesday was a day full of incident.  The Turks opened up at 4.30 a.m. with a heavy barrage of shrapnel.  At times throughout the day the head of Monash Valley, where B Company was stationed, was hard pressed, and on several occasions it looked as though the men there would give way.  Yet when darkness fell the line was still intact.

The day was a most disastrous one for the brigade.  At about 3 p.m. the gallant brigadier, Colonel H. N. MacLaurin, lost his life.  He was reconnoitring in the vicinity of Steele’s Post, close to where Lieut-Colonel Owen had established his headquarters.  Major F. D. Irvine, the brigade Major, had been warned by both Major Brown and Corporal Malone not to expose himself, but he disregarded the warning and met the same fate as his brigadier.  The command of the 1st Brigade was given to Colonel Owen, and Major A. J. Bennett took over the 3rd Battalion.
