He received a gunshot
wound that perforated his abdomen, and died from this wound. His
Casualty form notes that "he specifically asked not to receive a
Christian burial" - he was Jewish. His
diary (and that of his brother Alexander) are held by the Australian
Jewish Historical Society, Sydney. -
