On Tuesday, 2 February 1915, Jesse Herbert
Taylor, 681, enlisted at his local Kogarah office as a lance
sergeant in the 19th Battalion of the Australian Imperial Force
(AIF).
Ten months later on 15 December 1915, he was
killed in action at Gallipoli, and buried in Shrapnel Valley
Cemetery.
It would take more than 94 years for a headstone
to be placed on his grave.
The Gallipoli Photographic Expedition, 2009,
(organised by the Spirits of Gallipoli) photographed and
checked every AIF headstone and memorial at Gallipoli.
During this process, it was found that Jesse had
no headstone.
The Office of Australian War Graves (OAWG) and
the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) were informed.
Just over one month later, a headstone was finally placed on
Jesse’s grave.
